Spring Break, Mexico: Cocktails - Posted: March 8th, 2009

With the legal drinking age of 18 in Mexico, it’s little wonder why college students from all over the US hit the country south of the border during spring break. Whether in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco, the party atmosphere is alive with a bustling bevy of young revelers making the most of their respite from school.
Since you’re hitting the land of tequila, why not tap into the local flavors instead of partaking in more of the usual beer fare that you can get anywhere else. These cocktails should find their way into a few of your spring break party favors, whether you’re downing them in a bar or at the room you’re staying at.
Mexicola
Easy to drink and especially refreshing, this should give cola drinkers an alternate way to sip on their favorite soda. To make it, pour two ounces of tequila into a tall glass, add an ounce of freshly-squeezed lime juice, top up with your favorite cola drink and dump a ton of ice. Perfect for a hot afternoon on the beach!
Tequila Sunrise
This drink is a local classic that anyone who visits the country should know. To make it, whip out a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour two ounces of tequila and a splash of orange juice into the rig and shake thoroughly. Strain into a glass with ice cubes. Slowly add half an ounce of grenadine to making sure it rises (for presentation, mostly). Stir before drinking.
Mexican Sunset
You’ve downed the sunrise, now here’s a drink to start the early evening off with. To make it, pour three ounces of tequila, a quarter shot of triple sec, a splash of pineapple juice and a half an ounce of lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Work it vigorously and strain into glass filled to the middle with ice cubes. Relaxing as can be.
