Skittle Infused Vodka - Posted: December 23rd, 2009

Infusing vodka with Skittles is a very popular trend right now. There are quite a few different ways it can be done, here I will show you how I chose to do it.
Supplies:
- One bottle of Vodka (I used 750ml of Absolut)
- 5 empty water bottles
- 5 bottles or flasks
- Skittles (I used 2 191g bags)
- 1 funnel
- Measuring cup
- Coffee filters
- 5 bowls (or bags), to separate Skittle flavors
You may also want to cover your working area with paper or a table cloth, as this can get a bit messy. If you’re wanting to make a different sized batch, here’s the formula that I used: 10 Skittles to every 1 ounce of vodka. So for this one I’m putting 5oz in every bottle, so I will use 50 Skittles. If you wanted 6oz in each bottle, you would use 60 Skittles, etc.
Step 1: Separate Skittle Flavors
The first thing you need to do is separate the Skittle flavors. You can put them in either bags or bowls, I like to use bowls simply because they are easier to work with. If you used 750ml of vodka, you should have 50 Skittles of each color.
Step 2: Fill Infusion Bottles
Fill the plastic water bottles with 5oz of vodka each. It doesn’t have to be exact, as you can adjust later if need be.
Step 3: Add Skittles
Pour the Skittles of one color into one infusion bottle, followed by a separate color in another bottle, and so on until all five bottles have 50 skittles sitting at the bottom of the vodka.
You could use the funnel to place the Skittles in the bottles, but I like to use my hands, simply because Skittle residue won’t stick to my hands as much as the funnel. If you choose to use a funnel, I would suggest rinsing it in between every flavor of Skittle so that they don’t end up mixing.
Step 4: Shake, Shake, Shake
Now that all of your infusion bottles have 5oz of vodka and 50 Skittles, it’s time to mix them. Give each bottle a good shake, don’t skimp out on this part, the more you shake, the better. You’ll notice as soon as you put the Skittles in the vodka the color will start to change, but you will still see white Skittles sitting at the bottom. This just means the Skittles have a lot more dissolving to do until
they are complete.
After you have shaken them, sit them aside for a few hours to let the dissolving finish. I usually let mine sit overnight, that way I know they are completely dissolved. Once they are done dissolving I give them another good shake as well. At this point you’ll notice white gunk floating at the top of your mixtures, we’ll take care of that in the next step.
Step 5: Filter
There are a few ways to go about getting the white gunk out of the infusion bottles. Some people prefer to use paper towels, but I like to use coffee filters, and find they work just as well.
I put a funnel in a measuring cup, and put coffee filters inside the funnel. It hard to say how many coffee filters you will need to use, as not every coffee filter is the same. With mine I used two filters at a time, and that seemed to work fine except for the green which I had to filter twice.
I then poured my mixtures into my filtration device and let them drain. This took a bit longer than I expected if I let them just sit there, so occasionally I would hold the filter in the air so it could drip faster. It’s also a good idea to pour a little bit into the filter at a time. I tried to pour the whole mixture in the filter once and it just caused a big mess. I was once told by someone that you will end up with more Skittle infused vodka than what you started with once done filtration, but I always end up with the same amount or even a little less.
Make sure to rinse your funnel and measuring cup between each flavor so that your flavors don’t mix.
Step 6: Bottle
Now it’s time to bottle your delicious vodkas. Normally I would use flasks or nice bottles, but I had some jam jars lying around so I figured I’d use them for this time. If you are using bottles with a thin neck, it’s probably a good idea to use the funnel- and of course rinse it in between each flavor. I didn’t use a funnel, simply because my bottles have a large opening and I didn’t find it necessary.
Step 7: Chill and Serve
Now you should have one bottle for each flavor of skittle.
Now all you have to do is stick them in the freezer (I usually leave
them in there overnight), and serve!
Once they’re done freezing and ready to serve, they’re still going to be pretty strong. You could drink them straight, but I would suggest mixing them.
- Mix them with 7up or ginger ale
- Mix them with Cola
- Serve them on the rocks
- Try them in any way you like ? the options are endless!
