2009 Baseball Season Special: The A-Roid And Other Red Sox Cocktails - Posted: March 23rd, 2009

By BoozeMonger

With baseball season starting, bars are taking advantage of the frenzy by rolling out cocktails for their favorite teams. Today, we’ll look at a couple of new cocktails made especially with Red Sox fans in mind.

First up is a controversial cocktail from the bar Bonfire, who rolled out the drink as part of their 2009 Red Sox menu. It received a fair amount of attention (and criticism and laughter) around the web due to its subject matter - steroid-pumping Alex Rodriguez. Dubbed the A-Roid, it’s got all you can ask for in an Alex Rodriguez drink, save for a Madonna reference.

A-Roid

A serving of A-Roid consists of a two-ounce shot of El Mejor Tequila, followed by a performance-enhancing Spicy Tomato Juice concoction, served in a needle-less syringe. The energy-boosting tomato juice is a mix of smoked tomatoes and jalapenos put through a juicer, along with canned tomato juice and tabasco sauce. I honestly don’t know if it’s really performance-enhancing or just tongue-burning, but I digress.

Blu Sushi rolled out a number of their own cocktails as well with a few notables, including the ridiculously nutty Papelbon & Jelly (an unusual drink for the unconventional Red Sox pitcher Jonathon Papelbon) and Manny’s Homer RamierX (in memory of ex-Red Sox Danny Ramirez, perhaps, whose departure was arguably the X-Factor the team needed to evolve).

Papelbon & Jelly

To make the Papelbon & Jelly, simply put three ounces of Smirnoff Watermelon Vodka (yep, didn’t even know they had that), a tablespoon of jelly and a splash of cranberry juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain the thing into a peppered flute, fill the rim of the glass with peanut butter and sprinkle crushed nuts along the edges.

Manny’s Homer RamierX

To put together Manny’s Homer RamierX, put together two ounces of Cabo Wabo Tequila, an ounce of X-Rated Fusion Liqueur and a splash of sour mix. Top it up with Red Bull and mix. Add salt along the rim and a slice of lime for garnish.
